RESUMO

Neurophysiological advances have given us exciting insights into the systems responsible for spatial mapping in mammals. However, we are still lacking information on the evolution of these systems and whether the underlying mechanisms identified are universal across phyla, or specific to the species studied. Here we address these questions by exploring whether a species that is evolutionarily distant from mammals can perform a task central to mammalian spatial mapping-distance estimation. We developed a behavioural paradigm allowing us to test whether goldfish (Carassius auratus) can estimate distance and explored the behavioural mechanisms that underpin this ability. Fish were trained to swim a set distance within a narrow tank covered with a striped pattern. After changing the background pattern, we found that goldfish use the spatial frequency of their visual environment to estimate distance, doubling the spatial frequency of the background pattern resulted in a large overestimation of the swimming distance. We present robust evidence that goldfish can accurately estimate distance and show that they use local optic flow to do so. These results provide a compelling basis to use goldfish as a model system to interrogate the evolution of the mechanisms that underpin spatial cognition, from brain to behaviour.

Accurate knowledge of species colour discrimination is fundamental to explain colour based behaviours and the evolution of colour patterns. We tested how the receptor noise limited model, widely used in behavioural ecology, matched actual colour discrimination thresholds obtained using behavioural tests. Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) were first trained to push a target coloured disk placed among eight grey disks of various luminances on a grey plate. Guppies were then tested to find target disks, which varied in colour contrast from the plate. The target disks followed a gradient going from high contrast to inconspicuous against the grey background. We plotted the percentage of correct choices of each colour in the gradient against the model prediction and determined the discrimination thresholds using the inflection point of the fitted sigmoid curve. We performed the experiment on six colour gradients: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Four colour gradients: red, orange, green and blue, showed a discrimination threshold that matched the model predictions. However, deviations of the model for the yellow and purple gradients suggest that ecological relevance of some colours could affect decision-making in behavioural tests and that we can no longer assume that the rules for colour discrimination are independent of colours.

Visual pigments can vary across the retina in many vertebrates, but the behavioural consequences of this retinal heterogeneity are unknown. Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) vary dorsoventrally in visual pigments and forage both on the ground and at the water surface, exposing different retinal regions to two very different visual environments. We tested guppy behaviour towards a moving stimulus presented below or above the guppy. We used 12 different narrow-band wavelength stimuli matching each of the opsin peak sensitivities presented either at the top or the bottom of our experimental apparatus. We analysed behaviours of 50 male and 50 female guppies over 4800 trials where a moving stimulus pattern was presented to each guppy. We found that wavelength, position and speed of the stimuli influenced male and female behaviour and seems to be mediated by the long wavelength sensitive photoreceptors. Males also had stronger behavioural responses than females whereas females performed more foraging-related pecking behaviour. Our results suggest that the spatial requirement of visual tasks and their ecological context are important and appear to be partly correlated with photoreceptor arrangement in the retina.

Physiological parameters provide indicators to evaluate how organisms respond to conservation actions. For example, individuals translocated during reinforcement programmes may not adapt to their novel host environment and may exhibit elevated chronic levels of stress hormones and/or decreasing body condition. Conversely, successful conservation actions should be associated with a lack of detrimental physiological perturbation. However, physiological references fluctuate over time and are influenced by various factors (e.g. sex, age, reproductive status). It is therefore necessary to determine the range of natural variations of the selected physiological metrics to establish useful baselines. This study focuses on endangered free-ranging Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni hermanni), where conservation actions have been preconized to prevent extinction of French mainland populations. The influence of sex and of environmental factors (site, year and season) on eight physiological parameters (e.g. body condition, corticosterone concentrations) was assessed in 82 individuals from two populations living in different habitats. Daily displacements were monitored by radio-tracking. Most parameters varied between years and seasons and exhibited contrasting sex patterns but with no or limited effect of site. By combining behavioural and physiological traits, this study provides sex-specific seasonal baselines that can be used to monitor the health status of Hermann's tortoises facing environmental threats (e.g. habitat changes) or during conservation actions (e.g. translocation). These results might also assist in selection of the appropriate season for translocation.

Although disruption of glucose homeostasis is a hallmark of ageing in humans and laboratory model organisms, we have little information on the importance of this process in free-living animals. Poor control of blood glucose levels leads to irreversible protein glycation. Hence, levels of protein glycation are hypothesized to increase with age and to be associated with a decline in survival. We tested these predictions by measuring blood glycated haemoglobin in 274 adult collared flycatchers of known age and estimating individual probability of recapture in the following 2 years. Results show a strong decrease in glycated haemoglobin from age 1 to 5 years and an increase thereafter. Individuals with high levels of glycated haemoglobin had a lower probability of recapture, even after controlling for effects of age and dispersal. Altogether, our findings suggest that poor control of glucose homoeostasis is associated with lower survival in this free-living bird population, and that the selective disappearance of individuals with the highest glycation levels could account for the counterintuitive age-related decline in glycated haemoglobin in the early age categories.

The question of why females evaluate more than one sexual trait to choose their mates has received increasing attention in recent years. Here, we investigated the information-content of both morphological and behavioural sexual traits that have been identified as predictors of male reproductive success in the palmate newt, Lissotriton helveticus. We examined the co-variation of multiple traits with one aspect of male quality, the male body condition, using both a correlative study and an experimental diet restriction. We found that the development of the three morphological sexual traits (filament length, hind-foot-web size, and crest size) was positively inter-correlated, and was correlated to body condition. In contrast, courtship activity, an important indicator for male reproductive success, was uncorrelated to male body condition. Our results suggest that females likely obtain redundant information on male condition when evaluating filament length, hind-foot-web size and crest size during mate choice. Contrary to our expectations, display activity was not a reliable indicator of male condition, leaving the information-content of this trait unraveled. Our results further suggest that complex, multiple traits may evolve because redundant message, unreliable signals and, possibly, multiple messages can coexist.
